try local papers or yahoo! real estate first. i’m not advocating for agents at all, but they can set you up with an rss feed so that when something comes on the market that meets your criteria, you’ll be emailed the MLS listing. so then you can check it out, and then call them if you’re interested. i really think that’s the way to go, especially in a competitive market like boston. you don’t want to miss out on new listings and sometimes the only way to get them is thru a realtor. good luck and happy house hunting!

Great question! Well what I told my agent to do is to send, via e-mail, a list of homes in my price, size(1-2br or sq footage), and most important LOCATION. After getting the list of properties that I can sift through on my own, (s)he then set up appointments to view the homes that I wanted to see. This way you can be assured that you are selecting from what you want BEFORE going to the house and being dissappointed. Also you can ask a friend how (s)he found his/her home, or drive around to check for open houses. It can seem like a long prcess but this way you aren’t wasting time on seeing homes that you know absolutely won’t work for you. Hope this helps. Good luck.
