Unless you have a student visa (F-1) or a work visa (H) you cannot stay in the US for a year. You can certainly buy a car but you will not be able to drive it as you cannot get a US drivers license and it is unlikely that anyone will rent an apartment to you unless you pay for it all up front.

You may be able to, the green card is a permanent residence card; so obviously not the choice for you. There are work options, and visiting options as well.
This is a link to the visiting section of the site, one of the stipulations is that you maintain a residence in UK. This site should be able to answer your questions, and help you find the best option for you to take for you visit.
Good luck!

I am quite sure you can rent a property. However, buying a car might not be so easy as you might need to fill in certain details which might not be available to you.

you would have to prove you had enough money for 12 months and they would be unwilling to let you stay longer than three months or 6 months in any 12 month period. Your international driving licence is valid in the states and you can buy a car there and insure through specialist uk brokers. You can go to canada and mexico for a stay and then re-enter, with a repeat multiple entry business visa you can come and go as much as you like for short stays
