How do I rent my private property to the council?
I would like to rent my private studio flat to the council so they use for council tenants and pay me the rent directly. How do I go about doing this? I went on the Enfield Council website but couldn’t find anything.

You can just get in touch with the housing services department and let them know you wish them to disseminate your details to people looking for private accomodation. The council don’t rent the property from you, they just act as a middleman to help prospective tenants find you – Enfield doesn’t manage its own housing stock anymore, that’s done by their ALMO, Enfield Homes. The council will send an inspector to inspect your flat to make sure it’s of a lettable standard and then put you on the housing options register.
Be aware though that landlords no longer have the right to have a council pay a tenant’s Housing Benefit directly – the shift to Local Housing Allowance means that tenants can have their HB paid to them personally and then they pay their landlord just like any other tenant.

My friend, in a similar situation, registered her flat with an letting agent, who then got her a DSS tenant
The other thing you can do is advertise the flat for rent, in your local paper and say in the advert that DSS tenants are welcome

You won’t find anything on the Council website because, quite simply, they do not do what you are looking for them to do. Some housing associations used to do this, but the number of them that still do has dwindled away to very few, and I do not know if any are active in Enfield at the moment.
