I would recommend that you travel to that hidden jewel of the South, South Carolina. The coast is riddled with wonderful beaches that are not commercial and touristy. Three that you should check out are Pawleys Island, Kiawah Island, and Edisto Beach. Not NEARLY as expensive as California and Florida, you get a lot of bang for your buck. At Pawleys (my favorite), you practically have the beach to yourself, but 10 miles up the road is the best seafood in the world. You can go to the shops at Pawleys and watch the world-famous hammocks being made by hand. And if you’re up for a little adventure, there’s a small cemetary that is haunted by the ghost of Alice Flagg. Happy trails!

Lots more to do and see in California. Stick to the SF Bay area or central coast. Florida is a bit one dimensional.
