We are in a recession right? So where are people getting the money to shop, vacation, buy new cars etc?
You hear it on the news and you read about in the paper on a daily basis, we are in a recession, people are losing their jobs, homes, retirement funds etc, however, during the Christmas season it was business as usual, despite what the media has told us, people were shopping until they dropped, literally. Homes are being built and purchased, cars are being sold, and during the Christmas weekend, my husband and I took a much needed break and spent 4 days in Florida, and let me tell you, the airports were packed, with many travelers going wherever. We did visit Disney World while we were there, and it too, was packed with people and lots and lots of kids. There were people there in groups, wall to wall. Okay, so my question is, am I missing something here?
I am not disputing that there are many many people out of work and losing their homes, but there must be a heck of a lot of people not paying much attention to the economy, because they are truly spending. We cut back by not buying Christmas gifts, and instead hosted a dinner, and told everyone, we were going away instead of shopping. We saved for 6 months, and used no charge cards, to make this trip. My neighbor’s daughter works at a local discount center and she said they were selling flat screen tv’s so fast they could hardly keep them in the store. She said most of the buying was done with credit cards, So what gives? Are people really not that worried about whats going on, are they just ignoring it and hoping for the best, is it more hype than truth to our economy? I know its been said that spending helps the economy, but Enlighten me, please.
No rude, obnoxious answers, please.
rawen, you would have been better offer not responding to my question! I wanted to get peoples opinion about spending in the recession, this had nothing to with my going to disney world, and how we went. We also did use credit cards to vacation, which many people are doing, putting themselves further into debt! thats my point! read before you respond!
correction, we did NOT use credit cards!
thanks to everyone who did put more thought into their answer, before responding!

Yes we are in a recession and people deciding not to spend money only makes the recession worse.
So long as you have your job, you can pay your bills and shop.
The stock market is so rotten, it might be better to put your money under your pillow. Or spend it now and enjoy it while you can!
The irony is that the more the media talks about how bad things are, the more worried people get, the less they spend… Then people get laid off of their jobs because people aren’t spending, which make it spiral to a worse situation.
The best thing that we can do in a bad market is to continue as usual.
I am glad to hear that people are spending. When they stop, the market only gets worse.

I have friends in many businesses, who’ve lost jobs, or most of their income. People with steady jobs, such as nurses, police , teachers, etc. So far, still have money to spend, and can actually invest since there are lots of bargains out there.
Many people aren’t spending at all. Hence so many stores closing.

Yeah i know. Imagine if we go in a depression which is much worse than a reccesion. Many people would loose jobs and doctors and police will still have jobs but many people wont go to the doctors so they wont run out of money. All thanks to the s******* fag named George Bush. He made this recession and should fix it, just because of his stupid war against Iraq

To tell you the truth, I’m a little worried that the international monetary system is going to collapse, and my money will be worth nothing. So, I think a lot of spending is pre-emptory.
I would be willing to spend money to upgrade my home, get it better energy-efficient and make sure the furnishings, linens, dishes etc. will last through a 10-year depression. Also, to upgrade clothes.
Investing in a cheap entertainment source (iPods, DVDs that work, etc.) are also a good thing.
I don’t think I’d spend money on a trip to Disneyland, but I’m giving serious consideration to spending money to see far-away relatives before the real crunch happens.
(-: Then again, some people just spend money when they are stressed out. Oh well. It probably is helping the economy; I hope they don’t regret it later.

Just because we are in a recession doesn’t mean the universe stops.
GDP has fallen by 1%. Usually it grows about 3%. So there’s not too much difference between a recession and a boom for most people.
It’s great to see people spending. They are the people keeping the economy from getting worse!
Spending helps the economy like this. Every dollar spent is a dollar of income for someone else.
If spending drastically falls, that means income falls. Jobs go and people earn less. Simple as that.
And everyone out there who can afford to spend can keep doing it. Nothing changes unless your scare you’ll loose your job.
If everyone got scared and didn’t spend at all, then no one would make any income and we’d all be screwed.
PS- The International Monetary System won’t collapse.
PS- George Bush is not at fault. The spending on the Iraq war has the same effect as Obama’s stimulus plan- increasing spending and incomes in the economy. Bush is not at fault. Blame Roosevelt, Clinton and Carter. It’s their policies which started this crisis

They got the money the same way you did. You went on a vacation to Disney World, didn’t you?
