What should I do with my job?
I work for one of the well know Pest Control companys in the country. I’m in sales and my job is to go to peoples homes and sell the treatments. The way it works is, I have to make my draw of the month first before I get commision on my sales. I’m the best sales person in the region right now but my boss just seem unsatisfy with my work. When I don’t get sales he thinks I’m taking a vacation. I’m busting my butt off and also, before I get pay for the jobs I sold, the work have to be done first. They’re short of technicians and sometimes he would ask me to go do the job myself. This happen for the 4th time now. I was hired to be the sales person but now, I have to go do the technicians job too in order for me to get pay. The worse thing is, I don’t get pay for doing the technicians job. I feel like I have to do everything on order to get pay the money I already earned. His boss would get on his asss for being so freakin unorganized and then he would get my asss too. What should I do?

While a lot of people don’t appreciate their boss, yours sounds like a real pain. I am sure you would get a new job if you could.
If you are doing hourly work and not getting paid for it, that’s probably against labor law. Are you willing to call the U.S. Dept. of Labor in your area and find that out? I would be.

You have a legitimate reason to go talk to Human Resources. Tell them you deserve to be paid for your time. In the meantime, find another job…if the company is that disorganized it will only end up driving you more crazy.

why would his boss get on ur azz, for ur boss being unorganized?? can you maybe relocate to different part of the city? Tell them why you want to move..
in a company there always should be someone to be able to complain against problems.

been there and done that. Tell him to just get the start done himself you have sales to make. You are not a spray jockey. If you are #1 as you say he does not want you going to another company. I worked for the big O— once upon a time and it was the same with me. When he thinks you are on vacation ask him to join you for the day. Heck let him help your sales calls. While you are with him tell him he needs more techs to get the job done. If he can’t keep up with the work load. That is his job. The DM will also see it your way. He is trying to keep his p&l low so his bonus is higher.

Well, there are always problems in our jobs. All of us have one or many problems. I think, that you must talk, honesty with your boss and let him know, that you do not agree on the way that he manages the diferent charges, and also let him know, for what job are you being paid. And ask for the extras for doing the technicians task. Meanwhile , start looking for another job, I think that , sincerely.

Is it possible to change jobs and move to a competitor? Or, another sales job in a different industry? Being able to sell is an amazing talent to have and very transferable.
If you’re the best sales person in the region, that’s a fact and it doesn’t matter what your boss says. Sometimes you just have a crappy boss who is never pleased with what you do. The problem is the boss and it’s probably because they feel insecure. Try to find compassion for the other person (i.e., maybe he’s scared of losing his job, maybe he was picked on in school and you remind him of someone, etc.).
Also, instead of worrying what they think, focus on what you know about yourself. In your case, you know you’re the top sales person. Own it. Be proud of it. Broadcast it.
Sometimes, managing perceptions is all it takes. Put some effort into communicating all the hard work you do. If you don’t get sales, talk about all the calls you made and then just shrug it off.
You could also try speaking with your boss about this issue. However, the key is to not do it when you’re pissed off. The other thing is to try to really listen to what they’re saying even if it comes out sounding like crap. Some people lack communication skills. Really try to focus on a solution and a common goal.
Sometimes being really honest helps too. Rather than act like you don’t care what he thinks, tell him you value his opinion and you feel very demoralized when he does x and that you were wondering if your perception of the situation was a bit off. Don’t blame. Always chalk it up to differences in how you communicate.

You should ask your boss to meet professionally in the office or outside of the office and discuss your detailed job description. If you don’t mind doing the Technician aspect of the work, then negotiate an hourly rate of pay when preforming that job responsibility. This way, if some of the contracts you have closed, have not been completed in terms of technical work, you are now on the regular payroll period cycle and will be issued a check during those pay periods. But, if you don’t like the Technician side of things…then find yourself another job…FIRST…considering your the best sales person in the region…I have to believe you maybe able to sell anything…including your resume. When it comes to Marketing/Sales, this department is the back bone of all industries…this is the only department in an establishment that generates Gross Revenue within a company. In fact, large profitable companies inflate their Marketing/Sales Department Budget so that the personnel(s) within that department have the resources available to complete their jobs effectively and efficiently. If your boss can not acknowledge this business concept…then QUIT!!!
